Inter-Net-Working ... for the benefit of all
Saturday, 26 November 2011 20:25

The internet to some means freedom.  To others it represents the evil of our modern age serving as the greatest deceiver and distractor, of all time, from our true selves.   But,  somewhere in the middle, when kept in perspective, the internet can be a very useful tool for working towards an objective.  Which brings us to the center of this discussion- the new website called Costa Rica South.  it was designed and built with no other reason than to serve our growing community here in the Southern Pacific Region of Costa Rica and those that may want to visit or move here.

Only Good News in Perez Zeledon
Friday, 21 October 2011 14:33

There are many in this world that, when faced with bad news, either are too distracted by daily distractions to notice or sit and blog around complaining that someone should do something about it.  There is yet another less popular bunch of bananas that exist who realize that there is not much of anything sensible one can do about these diabolically huge occurrences.  So they seek higher ground and head for the hills of Perez Zeledon, an expansive district in diverse southern Costa Rica.

There are those that are concerned about what would happen to Costa Rica and it's communities if the rest of the world started to crumble.  What if imports stopped, fuel shortages or other natural disasters took place?  How could we rebuild our local communities independently of the outside world?  A group called Open Source Ecology is starting to provide the answers. As an extended community, we should lead up our own efforts to secure our independence and autonomy to preserve and maintain the quality of our lives. Read more below and watch the video for more information on the project

Why Live in Costa Rica?
Monday, 05 September 2011 03:01

So many people from my past who find me on the internet ask why I moved to Costa Rica.  Well, I tell them, maybe you should sit down because the answer is a bit long if you really want to know.  When we lived in the US and attended monthly potlucks, one of the topics of conversation was whether Nirvana actually existed and if it did, where was it?

Jetsons In The Jungle: WiFi in the Rainforest with a Solar-Powered Internet Tower!

When I first arrived and bought the property of what’s now the Buenaventura Retreat Center in this hidden and serene valley in Costa Rica, there was no electricity, no land lines or cell phone service, no TVs, no washing machines, no refrigeration, no ice, and definitely no internet!

And lets not forget to mention the road conditions back then, a 20 mile 4×4 only drive to town took nearly 3 hours over cloud forest covered mountain ridges and through lush and dense valleys of primary rainforest on a bumpy, rocky and often very muddy back-country dirt road. That was 2001… Buenaventura in the Flintstones era.

Beware Exterminator Theft
Friday, 20 May 2011 08:17

We have a report of a Costa Rica South reader being told to leave his house for two hours while a company performed the fumigation that he requested. He walked to a nearby coffee shop to read a book and wait. When they finished, the exterminators met him at the coffee shop and he paid them and received his keys back. When he returned to his house some personal items of value where missing including field glasses and a calling card. Please be aware of this possibility and, if possible, stay within sight of your house or pack valuables away before providing access to exerminator company employees.

THE BIG SHIFT – GREAT CHANGE IS COMING TO THE PLANET

By Dennis Gaumond

 A Vibrational Universe

Almost everyone is aware that enormous change is happening to this planet even if they are only aware of climate change. Although there is no doubt that global warming is affecting the earth-changes, there are many other enigmatic phenomena, such as an increase in seismic activity, solar flares and anomalies in the rest of the solar system that are harder to explain. There are other factors driving the changes. This article will offer some alternative explanations, which will hopefully enable us to better comprehend this process of change. It has been given many names – Armageddon, the Apocalypse, the 2012 thing, the Ascension, etc – but I prefer to call it the Big Shift. Although many of us understand the Shift in an intuitive way, a left-brained, logical understanding is also very useful in bringing us balance and clarity.

Repatriating for Health Care
Thursday, 05 May 2011 21:39

Like many Americans, I have gone bankrupt because of our for-profit health insurance system. Unlike most Americans, I am leaving the system altogether, and coming to Costa Rica. International moves are expensive, but the cost of repatriation dwarfs the risk of becoming financially crippled for simply getting sick. My daughter has a pre-existing condition. She is four years old. There is a cyst on her heel that will, we are told, go away naturally in a few years. We made the mistake of going to a doctor, and having this bump examined, so it now resides in her permanent medical records.
